Scottish Parliamentary Elections and Aftermath

May 25, 2021 11:36 AM
By Stuart Crawford

As you will be aware, the recent Scottish Parliamentary elections results were extremely disappointing for us, with a reduction from five MSPs to four. Of the seventy-three constituency seats contested we lost deposits in fifty of them. Here in East Lothian we had set a target of getting at least 7% of the turnout and saving our deposit. Despite of the best efforts of our candidate Euan Davidson and a small band of activists we managed only 3.4%.

This is a clear setback after the steady improvement we had experienced in the 2019 Haddington & Lammermuir ward Council by-election and in the most recent European and General Elections and something we need to address before next year's Local Authority elections.

In the aftermath of May 6th our Convener, Kit Fraser, resigned from his leadership of the Executive Committee. He has been replaced in the interim period between and the end of the year by Stuart Crawford, who was our candidate in the 2019 Council by-election.
