Convenor's Letter in the East Lothian Courier 29 November 2018

In East Lothian Courier

Dear Sir,

It is clear that the UK now faces three choices: leaving the EU without a deal; Mrs May's Deal and Staying in Europe. It seems unlikely that Parliament will agree Mrs May's deal.
However, we all agree that the time has come to "get on with it". Consequently, the only viable solution appears to be to refer the question back to the electorate so that Parliament can then make an informed choice.
The People's Vote campaign (www.peoples-vote.uk) now enjoys strong cross party and popular support and this route now appears to be the only solution available to Mrs May which will allow her to protect the national interest.
On two consecutive Saturdays this month, East Lothian Liberal Democrats polled passers by outside the Corn Exchange in Haddington on their views using a visual display, The Brexitometer. Asked if "the people should have a Final Say on the Brexit deal" around 80% said Yes; 10% "Don't Know" and 10% No.
This picture provides persuasive evidence that a People's Vote provides a sensible way out the impasse; arguably, it is now the only road out of town left open.
